History of Sitka
Sitka, Alaska, is the secondlargest city in the state of Alaska. It is also one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Alaska, with a long and fascinating history.
Sitka was originally settled by the Tlingit Indians, who named it Sheet’ka, or “place of the sheeted cliff”. In 1799, the first European settlers arrived, led by Russian fur trader Alexander Baranov. The settlers built a fort and trading post, which quickly became a thriving community.
In 1804, the famous Battle of Sitka took place, in which the Tlingit Indians unsuccessfully tried to drive the settlers out. This was the last major battle between Europeans and Native Americans in North America.
After the battle, the Russians and the Tlingits lived peacefully side by side for many years. In 1867, however, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia, and Sitka became part of the US.
Since then, Sitka has continued to grow and prosper. It is now a thriving city with a strong economy, a vibrant arts and culture scene, and a beautiful natural setting. Sitka is truly a oneofakind place, and its rich history is an important part of what makes it so special.
