Arkansas Post is located in the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Arkansas. It is situated on the west bank of the Arkansas River in Arkansas County. The city is also the county seat of Arkansas County. The population of Arkansas Post is approximately 3,000.
The city of Arkansas Post was established in 1686 by Henri de Tonti. Arkansas Post is the first European settlement in the Lower Mississippi Valley. The French originally named the city “Poste des Arkansas”. The Spanish took control of the area in 1762 and renamed it “уарікана Пост”. The Americans gained control of the city in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
The Battle of Arkansas Post occurred during the American Civil War. It was fought on January 11, 1863. Confederate and Union forces both claim victory in the battle.
The Arkansas Post National Memorial was established in 1960 to commemorate the history of the city of Arkansas Post. The Memorial includes the reconstructed home of James Lemon, the last Colonial Governor of Arkansas Post.

History of Arkansas Post
Arkansas Post was the first and oldest European settlement in Arkansas. It was founded by Henri de Tonti in 1686 as a French trading post on the Arkansas River. The French and Spanish traded with the native Quapaw people for furs and other goods. The post was later owned by the French, Spanish, and Americans before becoming part of the United States after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
The town was an important center of trade and politics in the early 1800s. Arkansas Post became the capital of Arkansas Territory in 1819 and was a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. The town was also the site of the first newspaper in Arkansas, the Arkansas Gazette, which was founded in 1819.
Arkansas Post declined in importance after the capital was moved to Little Rock in 1821. The population of the town began to decline in the late 1800s, and the city was annexed by the nearby town of Gillett in 1972.
