History of Troy (Alabama)
Troy is a city in Pike County, Alabama, United States. The city is the county seat of Pike County. Troy is a small city in southcentral Alabama, and is the site of Troy University. It is about 50 miles south of Montgomery, 35 miles southwest of Dothan, and 15 miles northwest of Eufaula in the southeastern part of the state.
The area that is now Troy was originally inhabited by Creek Indians who called it “Cholocco Litabixee”, meaning “the place of the cholocco trees.” Around 1824, the first settlers, John Shackleford and Edmund Pendleton, arrived and established a ferry across the Conecuh River.
Shackleford built a log cabin and a stockade, which served as a fort to protect the settlers from Indian attacks. A post office was established in 1826, and the city was incorporated in 1843.
Troy became the county seat of Pike County in 1847. The county courthouse was built in 1848, and the city was named in honor of Troy, New York, the hometown of one of the commissioners who helped locate the county seat.
The Civil War had a devastating effect on Troy. The city was occupied by Union troops in 1865 and many of the buildings were destroyed. It was not until the late 1800s that the city began to recover.
