History of Lake Havasu City

Lake Havasu City is a city in Mohave County, Arizona, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population of the city was 52,527 people. It is served by Lake Havasu City Airport.

The site of Lake Havasu City was initially settled by the Mohave people in the early 1800s. The Mohave built a small village along the Colorado River, which they called “Beaver Dam.”

In 1863, they were forced to relocate to reservations in Nevada and California by the U.S. Army, which was establishing Fort Mohave nearby.

The Army abandoned the fort in 1866, and the Mohave returned to their village.

In 1865, prospectors found gold in the area, and word of the strike spread. miners soon arrived, and a town called “Minersville” sprang up.

The miners dug a canal to divert water from the Colorado River to their claims, which created a large lake.

When the canal was completed, the water level in the Colorado River dropped, and the river began to dry up.

The town of “Riverside” was established on the east bank of the nowdry riverbed.

In 1901, the Santa Fe Railroad came through the area, and the town was renamed “Lake Havasu City”.

The city was incorporated in 1978.

Today, Lake Havasu City is a popular tourist destination, with its beaches, golf courses, and boating opportunities. The city is also home to the London Bridge, which was brought over from England in 1968.
