History of San Simeon

In 1769, the Spanish Portolá expedition occurred. This was the first time that Europeans had set foot in the area of San Simeon. The expedition was led by Gaspar de Portolá and Juan Crespí. They were searching for the fabled City of Quivira, which is believed to have been located in the Kansas region. However, they never found Quivira and instead discovered the San Andreas fault.

In 1803, the United States acquired the Louisiana Territory from France. This included the area of San Simeon.

In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain. The Mexican government divided the California territory into Alta California and Baja California. San Simeon became part of Alta California.

In 1833, the Mexican government secularized the California missions. This meant that the missions were no longer controlled by the Catholic Church.

In 1834, Julián Canseco was appointed to be the prefect of Alta California. He built a rancho at San Simeon.

In 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. This ended the MexicanAmerican War. As part of the treaty, Mexico ceded Alta California to the United States.

In 1850, California became a state. San Simeon was located in Monterey County.

In 1868, Charles Crocker of the Central Pacific Railroad bought the Canseco rancho. He built a wharf and a warehouse on the property.

In 1875, Crocker subdivided the rancho. He sold parcels of land to other people.

In 1878, George Hearst, a mining magnate, bought a ranch in San Simeon. He expanded it over the years.

In 1919, Hearst built a mansion on the property. This mansion is now known as Hearst Castle.
