History of Shamokin
The city of Shamokin, Pennsylvania, is located in Northumberland County on the west bank of the Susquehanna River. It was founded in 1773 by English settlers and originally named “Shawan Turk’s Town”. The name was later shortened to Shamokin. The city grew quickly due to the abundance of coal in the area, and by 1800 it was the third largest city in Pennsylvania.
In 1864, the Union Army launched an unsuccessful attack on the city during the Civil War. The following year, the city was occupied by Confederate troops for several months. After the war, the city continued to grow and became an important industrial center.
