History of Greenwood (South Carolina)
Greenwood is a city in and the county seat of Greenwood County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 23,222 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of the Greenwood, South Carolina Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The city was established in 1824, and was named after its founding father, Isaac Greenwood. Greenwood is located away from any major Interstate highways, but is connected to them by Federallydesignated U.S. Route 25 (US 25) and US 178.
Greenwood was originally settled by ScotsIrish Americans in 1787. It was later chosen as the county seat for newly formed Greenwood County in 1897. Greenwood was named after its first settler, Isaac Greenwood. The city was incorporated in 1887.
Greenwood is located in the Piedmont region of South Carolina, roughly between Charlotte, North Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia. It is situated on a gently rolling terrain with an average elevation of 1100 feet above sea level.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.3 square miles (42.2 km2), of which 16.3 square miles (42.1 km2) are land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km2) (0.37%) are water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 22,349 people, 8,068 households, and 5,024 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,374.6 people per square mile (531.0/km2). There were 8,693 housing units at an average density of 534.6 per square mile (207.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 47.43% White, 47.56% African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.71% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 1.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.47% of the population.
There were 8,068 households, out of which 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.9% were married couples living together, 21.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.5% were nonfamilies. 34.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.1% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 85.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.4 males.
