The city is within 40 miles (64 km) of Erie, PA and within 90 miles (140 km) of both Pittsburgh, PA and Cleveland, OH. It was settled on May 12, 1788, by a party led by David Mead. Its population was 13,388 at the 2010 census. The city is home to the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville and a branch campus of Allegheny College.
The city is located on French Creek, which flows into Lake Erie. As the crow flies, Meadville is approximately 90 miles (140 km) eastnortheast of Cleveland, Ohio; 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Erie, Pennsylvania; 130 miles (210 km) northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and 150 miles (240 km) northnorthwest of Buffalo, New York. It is located at 41°37′N 80°18′W.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.8 square miles (17.5 km2), of which 6.7 square miles (17.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2), or 0.96%, is water.
In 1795 Galen Merrill, a teacher at Allegheny College, built a log cabin near the present site of Mercyhurst residence hall. Shortly thereafter, William Jennings constructed a log tavern on the opposite side of French Creek from galen’s cabin. In 1803 Elijah D. Davis laid out the plans for the town of Meadville. The following year, Jesse Mead, brother of David Mead, laid out a plan for the borough of Meadville. Jesse Mead platted his property beginning at the northwest corner of what is now Park Avenue and Central Street. In 1808 the borough government was organized. Meadville became a city in January 1866.
During the Revolutionary War, Meadville was an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Fugitive slaves were sheltered at Conneauttee Park and helped to cross the Niagara River to freedom in Canada. Many of the slaves escaped from plantations in Virginia and Kentucky.
The Meadville Historic District, Bullard Park, Conneauttee Park, and Diamond Park are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
