History of San Rafael
San Rafael was founded in 1817 as the pueblo of San Rafael del Rancho de Nuestra Señora de Purísima Concepción. The first settlers were a group of Spanish soldiers and their families who abandoned the nearby Mission San Rafael Arcángel, seeking to live a more secular life. The pueblo quickly prospered, and by 1830 it had a population of 1,000.
In 1834, the Mexican government secularized the missions, and the lands of Mission San Rafael were divided among the local Indians and the settlers. The town continued to thrive, and by 1846 it had a population of over 1,500.
In 1848, California became part of the United States following the MexicanAmerican War. San Rafael continued to grow, and by 1860 it had a population of 2,500.
During the American Civil War, San Rafael was a stronghold of support for the Union cause. In 1865, the Union Army established a military hospital in the town, which treated over 25,000 sick and wounded soldiers during the course of the war.
After the war, San Rafael entered a period of rapid growth. New buildings and businesses sprang up, and by 1880 the town had a population of 5,000.
In 1906, the great San Francisco Earthquake struck, causing extensive damage in San Rafael. However, the town quickly rebounded, and by 1910 it had regained its preearthquake population of 5,000.
