History of Oraibi

The first recorded mention of Oraibi was by the Spanish Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza, who stopped there in 1539 while searching for the fabled Seven Cities of Cibola. De Niza noted that the village was roughly square in shape, with each side measuring about a halfmile long. The buildings were constructed of stone and mudadobe and were two or three stories tall.
In 1680, the Pueblo Revolt drove the Spanish out of New Mexico. The Hopi, who had remained loyal to the Spanish, were besieged by their former allies, the Zuni and the Navajo. The Hopi sought refuge on the mesas, where they built houses atop the cliffs.
Oraibi was one of the villages that survived and thrived after the Pueblo Revolt. By the early 1800s, it had become the largest Hopi village, with a population of around 2,000.
In 1834, the U.S. government established Fort Defiance in Navajo country, about 30 miles west of Oraibi. The fort was intended to keep the Navajo and Hopi from attacking each other and to protect settlers who were moving into the area.
On January 3, 1864, Colonel Kit Carson led a force of troops into the Hopi villages of Hano, Mishongnovi and Oraibi. The troops destroyed crops and buildings, and killed or drove away livestock.
