History of Bessemer
Bessemer is a city in western Jefferson County, Alabama, United States It is within the Birmingham metropolitan area. The Bessemer Historic District is a downtown commercial and industrial historic district that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
The city was founded in 1887 by businessmen from nearby Birmingport, who were seeking to take advantage of the new Bessemer Process for making steel. They acquired land southwest of Birmingham, Alabama, and donated it to the new city. With the aid of an army of workers from the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company (TCI), the city was built in just six months.
In its early years, Bessemer was a wild and woolly place, with unregulated bars and brothels. But as the city grew, it matured and became more refined. In 1908, the citizens of Bessemer voted to become a city, and thus free themselves from county government control.
The early years of the city were dominated by the steel industry, which led to the construction of large factories and mills. The economy diversified in the latter part of the 20th century, with the addition of auto manufacturing, distribution, and other industries.
Today, Bessemer is a thriving city with a population of over 26,000. It is home to several small businesses and three major industries: steel, auto parts, and distribution. The city has its own airport, and is served by Amtrak and Greyhound bus lines. It is also home to a number of schools, including the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Bessemer campus.
