History of San Bernardino
Founded in 1810, San Bernardino, California, is one of the oldest communities in the state. Native Americans, Spaniards, Mexicans, pioneers and settlers all played a role in the city’s rich history.
The area now known as San Bernardino was originally inhabited by the Serrano Indians. Spaniards established a Catholic mission here in 1810, and the colony of San Bernardino de Sena Estancia was founded two years later. When Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, the colony became part of Mexico.
The first American settlers arrived in 1851, when a group of Mormons from Utah bought land in the area. The Mormons built a fort and irrigation system, and the colony thrived. In 1857, the Mormons abandoned the settlement, due to tensions with the local Native American tribes.
The area was then occupied by miners, cattle ranchers and farmers. In 1867, the city of San Bernardino was officially founded. The Santa Fe Railroad arrived soon afterwards, making the city a key stop on the route between Los Angeles and the East Coast.
The city grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1886, the Southern Pacific Railroad reached San Bernardino, further boosting the city’s economy. In the early 20th century, the city became a popular resort destination, due to its mild climate and beautiful location.
