History of Saint Martinville
Saint Martinville is a city in and the parish seat of St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, United States.[1] It lies on Bayou Teche, sixteen miles south of Breaux Bridge, eighteen miles southeast of Lafayette, and nine miles north of New Iberia.
The city’s historians credit its founding to Louis Juchereau de St. Denis, a FrenchCanadian explorer. In 1707, an exploratory party led by Juchereau de St. Denis wintered near presentday St. Martinville. (This campsite was on high ground, safe from seasonal flooding.) The party had been searching for the Mississippi River, and when they found it the following spring, they followed it to the Gulf of Mexico.
Juchereau de St. Denis returned to France in 1708, and he reported favorably on the Louisiana Territory. In 1712, the king of France sent a detachment of troops under the command of ClaudeCharles d’Artaguette to take formal possession of Louisiana and establish a settlement on the Mississippi River. D’Artaguette and his troops landed at presentday St. Martinville in 1713, and he set up a military post and began construction of a fort.
The town that grew up around d’Artaguette’s fort became known as St. Martinville. The town was incorporated in 1811.
Early settlers to St. Martinville were attracted by the fertile land made available for agriculture. The area was also wellsuited for cattle ranching. The first crops planted in the area were tobacco and indigo. Cattle were brought in from Cuba and Florida.
The town flourished during the 1800s. It was a center of trade and commerce for the surrounding area. Sugar cane and cotton became important crops. St. Martinville was also known for its oak trees, which were used to build ships.
The city began to decline in the early 1900s when the railroad bypassed St. Martinville. The city’s economy was further hurt by the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl of the 1930s.
St. Martinville has rebounded in recent years, thanks in part to the efforts of the St. Martinville Historical Society. The society has restored many of the town’s historic buildings, and it operates a museum that tells the story of the city’s past.
