Starkville, Mississippi is a city in the northeastern part of the state. The population was 23,888 at the 2010 census. Starkville is the county seat of Oktibbeha County. It is the home of Mississippi State University (MSU). The Starkville area was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years. The Choctaw Indians were the first recorded inhabitants of the Starkville area. They settled in the area around 1832.
The town of Starkville was founded in 1848. It was named after General John Stark, a hero of the American Revolution. The town was originally located on the north side of a hill. This made it difficult to defend against attack. In 1853, the town was moved to its present location on the south side of the hill. This made it easier to defend the town against attack.
