History of Hannibal
Hannibal, Missouri is located on the Mississippi River in the westcentral part of the state. It is the county seat of Marion County and has a population of just over 17,000 people. Hannibal was founded in 1819 by Mark Twain’s father, John Clemens, and other settlers from Kentucky. The city was named after the ancient Carthaginian general, Hannibal Barca. Hannibal became a river port town and grew quickly during the early 1800s. By 1845, it was the sixth largest city in Missouri.
During the American Civil War, Hannibal was a proUnion town and was the site of a large Union army camp, Fort Wade. Confederate troops also occupied the town on two occasions during the war. In 1862, Union and Confederate forces fought the Battle of Hannibal, which resulted in a Union victory.
After the war, Hannibal continued to grow as a river port and railroad town. The Mark Twain Cave, located just outside of town, was a popular tourist destination and helped put Hannibal on the map. Twain himself lived in Hannibal for a time as a boy and based many of his famous stories, including “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” on his experiences growing up in the city.
Today, Hannibal is a small Midwestern city with a rich history. It is home to the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum, as well as a number of other historical sites and attractions.
