The area around presentday Kearney was originally inhabited by the Pawnee and Osage Native American tribes. In the early 1860s, the U.S. government built Fort Kearny in the area to protect settlers from attacks by the Sioux Tribe. The fort was named after Lt. Gen. Stephen W. Kearny, who had served in the MexicanAmerican War and the American Civil War.
