History of Romney
When most people think of the American West, very few consider the state of West Virginia. This is primarily because when most people think of the American West they imagine wide open spaces out west, while West Virginia is landlocked and considered part of the American East. However, the westernmost city in West Virginia Romney has a long and varied history that is well worth exploring.
The first thing to know about Romney is that it was actually founded twice. The first time was way back in 1762 by a man named Hughakeson. Hughakeson had been sent by the British Crown to survey the area and establish a town. He did just that, and Romney soon became a thriving community. Unfortunately, the town was destroyed during the Revolutionary War, and Hughakeson himself was killed.
After the war, Romney was rebuilt and became an important stop on the burgeoning National Road. The National Road was one of the first federallyfunded highways in the United States, and it ran from Cumberland, Maryland all the way to Vandalia, Illinois. Romney was a popular stop for travelers because it was the first town west of the Appalachian Mountains with a college HampdenSydney College which had been founded in 1775.
As the years passed, Romney continued to grow and prosper. In 1824, it was incorporated as a town, and in 1830 it officially became a city. During the Civil War, Romney was an important supply center for the Union Army, and it was also the site of a large Confederate prison camp. After the war, Romney’s economy rebounded and it once again became a thriving community.
