History of Urbana (Illinois)
urbana was first founded in 1833, when it was still part of the Illinois Territory. The city was named after urbana, Ohio by the settlers who were veterans of the American Revolution. The settlers had originally planned to build their new town on the site of the presentday city of Danville, Illinois, but were persuaded to move north by the local Native Americans.
The first years of urbana’s existence were difficult ones. The settlers were constantly plagued by illness and attacks from wild animals. In 1835, the city was hit by a severe tornado which destroyed much of the fledgling town. Despite these setbacks, the settlers persevered and by 1837 the city had grown to a population of nearly 500.
In 1839, urbana was designated as the county seat of Champaign County. This brought a steady stream of government officials and lawyers to the city, giving it a boost economically. The 1840s saw further growth for urbana, with the construction of several new buildings, including a courthouse and a jail.
The 1850s were a decade of change for urbana. In 1852, the city was connected to the outside world by the completion of the Illinois Central Railroad. This made urbana an important stop on the Underground Railroad, as fugitive slaves could take the train to freedom in the North. The city also became a center of the antislavery movement, with several prominent abolitionists making their homes here.
The Civil War put a temporary halt to urbana’s growth, but after the conflict ended the city quickly rebounded. In 1867, the University of Illinois was founded in urbana, bringing new people and new ideas to the city.
