History of Redding
Redding, California, was originally inhabited by the Wintu people. The first Europeans to settle in the area were miners during the California Gold Rush in 1849. Redding was officially founded in 1872, named after railroad builder Benjamin B. Redding. The city became a hub for agriculture and lumber due to its location along the Sacramento River. Redding continued to grow throughout the 20th century, with the construction of Shasta Dam and the creation of Whiskeytown Lake. Today, Redding is a vibrant city with a rich history.
