History of Pullman
The city of Pullman was originally founded in the 1880s as a planned community by George Pullman, president of the Pullman Palace Car Company. The company manufactured railroad cars and owned a large proportion of the land in the area. Pullman intended for the city to be a model of industrial harmony, and it included amenities such as parks, a library, and a college (which later became part of Northwestern University).
The city developed rapidly and by the early 1900s was home to over 30,000 residents, most of whom worked for the Pullman Company. However, the company began to experience financial difficulties in the early 1920s, which led to cuts in wages and jobs. This in turn led to a bitter strike in 1894, which Pullman eventually suppressed with the help of federal troops.
The aftermath of the strike left a sour taste in the mouths of many workers, and Pullman never fully recovered its image. In the years that followed, the city continued to decline as the Pullman Company downsized and many residents left in search of better opportunities.
The city was dealt another blow in the 1960s when the Pullman Company closed its doors for good. Since then, the city has been trying to revitalize itself and has seen some success in recent years. Restoration efforts are ongoing, and the city continues to be a unique example of early 20thcentury American industrial history.
