Price is located on Interstate 70, within southwest of Salt Lake City and east of Grand Junction, Colorado. Along with Grand County, Price is home to much of the FruitlandCoalville CSA.

History of Price
In 1873, Mormon pioneers led by David H. Cannon established Price, Utah, as a coal mining town. The area had previously been known as Castle Gate, because of the large rock formations nearby. The name “Price” comes from Orson Pratt, who was an early leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints (LDS Church) and helped settle the area.
In the early years, coal mining was the primary industry in Price. There were eight mines in operation within a twomile radius of the city. Some of the miners were members of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). In 1900, a local newspaper, The Carbon County News, began publication. It is the longestrunning newspaper in Utah.
The railroad played an important role in the development of Price. It was built in 1883 and helped the town to grow and prosper. The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad Company operated the line. In the early 20th century, the railroad was the only way to get coal out of the area.
In the 1920s, the coal mining industry began to decline and many mines closed. This led to a decrease in population and a struggling economy. During the Great Depression, the Utah State Legislature created the Utah State Industrial School to provide jobs and training for young men from disadvantaged backgrounds. The school was located in Price and operated until 1945.
During World War II, the coal mines reopened to help meet the demand for fuel. After the war, the mines closed again and the economy struggled. In the 1950s, the Utah Fuel Company opened a power plant and mine in Emery County, which provided jobs and helped to revive the economy.
In the 1960s and 1970s, there was a renewed interest in coal mining in the region. Several new mines opened and the population of Price began to grow. In the 1980s, the coal industry suffered another decline and many mines closed. This resulted in another economic downturn for the city.
Today, the economy of Price is diverse and includes healthcare, education, manufacturing, and tourism. The city is home to Utah State University Eastern and several medical facilities. It is also a popular destination for outdoor recreation, with several parks and trails in the area.
