History of Alexandria (Louisiana)
Alexandria is a city in Louisiana that was established in 1805. Alexandria was originally part of the Louisiana Purchase, and was known as the Town of Alexandria until it was incorporated as a city in 1817.
Alexander Fulton was the town’s first mayor, and he laid out the streets in a grid pattern. The town was originally platted with 201 blocks, each measuring one acre. The blocks were divided into four quarters, and the streets were named after four Marvels of the World: First Street was named for the Colossus of Rhodes, Second Street was named for the Lighthouse of Alexandria, Third Street was named for the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, and Fourth Street was named for the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
The town grew quickly, and by 1826 there were already 497 buildings. The population continued to grow throughout the 19th century, and by 1900 the population had reached 16,639.
During the Civil War, Alexandria was occupied by Union troops. The troops used the city as a base of operations, and many of the buildings were used as hospitals. After the war, Alexandria began to rebuild, and by 1880 the population had grown to 21,700.
The 20th century brought further growth to Alexandria. The city became a hub for transportation and manufacturing, and the population reached 32,000 by 1950. Today, Alexandria is a thriving city with a population of nearly 50,000. The city is home to a number of historical landmarks, and its downtown area is filled with shops, restaurants, and businesses.
