History of Harrodsburg

Harrodsburg is the oldest town in Kentucky and was established in 1774. It is located in Mercer County and was named after James Harrod who founded the town. Harrod’s father, Isaac, had been one of the settlers who established Boonesborough, Kentucky ten years earlier. Harrod purchased the land on which Harrodsburg would be built from the widow of Daniel Boone, who was also one of Harrod’s father’s fellow Boonesborough settlers.

The first structure erected in Harrodsburg was a fortification built to protect the small settlement from attacks by Native Americans. This fortification, which was called Fort Harrod, is now the centerpiece of Old Fort Harrod State Park. The town grew slowly at first, but began to grow more rapidly in the early 19th century. By 1820, the town had a population of nearly 500.

The growth of Harrodsburg came to a halt in 1833 when a cholera epidemic killed many of the town’s residents. The town recovered from this tragedy and continued to grow. The Louisville & Nashville Railroad reached Harrodsburg in 1859, further stimulating the town’s growth. The Civil War impacted the town as well, with many of the residents joining the Confederate Army. Despite the war, the town continued to grow and by 1900, the population had reached 2,000.

The 20th century saw further growth for Harrodsburg. The population reached 4,000 by 1970. The city has continued to grow in the 21st century and is now home to over 8,000 residents. Harrodsburg is a thriving community with a rich history. It is a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family.
