Waterloo is a city in northeastern Iowa, United States. It is the county seat of Black Hawk County. As of the 2010 census the population was 68,406, making it the ninth largest city in the state. The Waterloo–Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area is the 279th largest in the United States with a population of 268,790.
Waterloo was originally founded as Prairie Rapids Crossing in 1845 by Melvin Olive Drury, George and Mary Hanna, and Samuel Whitehorne. It was named after Waterloo, Belgium, the site of the Battle of Waterloo, which had ended the Napoleonic Wars in Europe. The town was renamed Waterloo in 1873. The town grew rapidly in the 1870s and 1880s, as it became a regional center for the manufacture of agricultural equipment.
Today, Waterloo is a regional center for healthcare and education, as well as a major employer in the area. Waterloo is home to the University of Northern Iowa, Waterloo Community Schools, Allen College, Waterloo Bucks baseball, and the WaterlooBlack Hawks hockey team. History of Waterloo
Waterloo is located in Upstate New York, north of Syracuse and west of Utica. It was founded in 1785 by John and Elizabeth Coffeen, and was first known as “White Creek.” The name was later changed to “Waterloo” in 1813, after the famous battle in Belgium.
The village of Waterloo was incorporated in 1813, and the town of Waterloo in 1815. The Erie Canal was completed in 1825, making Waterloo a major transportation hub. The Seneca Falls Convention, held in 1848, was the first women’s rights convention in the United States.
The New York State Psychiatric Institute was established in Waterloo in 1869, and the first geriatric hospital in the country opened here in 1908. The Consumer Credit Counseling Service was founded in Waterloo in 1951.
