History of Portsmouth (Rhode Island)
Portsmouth is a city in Newport County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 17,389 at the 2010 census. Portsmouth is the site of the naval shipyard of the same name, as well as the birthplace of the American Navy.
The town of Portsmouth was incorporated in 1638, and was named after the town of Portsmouth in England. Portsmouth was the site of the first naval battle of the American Revolution, the Battle of Aquidneck Island, also known as the Battle of Newport.
In 1774, the British navy bombarded Portsmouth with cannon fire, causing extensive damage to the town. The British then occupied Newport for the duration of the war.
In 1800, the naval shipyard was established in Portsmouth, and remained in operation until 1966. The shipyard was responsible for the construction of many famous ships, including the USS Constitution (better known as “Old Ironsides”).
Portsmouth was also home to the largest ammunition depot in the United States during World War II. The depot explosions of 1943 caused extensive damage to the town, and resulted in the deaths of 300 people.
