Pharr is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas. The city is situated on the Rio Grande, across from the Mexican city of Reynosa. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 64,064. The city was founded in 1908 as a farming community and incorporated in 1919. Pharr is considered a part of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission metropolitan area.

History of Pharr

Pharr is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 70,400 at the 2010 census. In 2019, the estimated population reached 78,316. It is part of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission metropolitan area.

The city was founded in 1908 by Frank Pharr, who served as its first mayor. The town was originally called “Pharr town” but later renamed to “Pharr” after the U.S. Post Office refused to acknowledge the name change. The city was incorporated in 1910. The area around Pharr was first settled in the 1840s. The town was named for John Pharr, an early settler in the area. The town became a stop on the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway in 1904.

The Pharr International Bridge, which links Pharr to Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, is one of the busiest ports of entry on the U.S.Mexico border. The bridge is used by over 3,000 commercial vehicles daily.

The city experiences a wetterthanaverage summer, receiving 22.7 inches (578 mm) of rain from June through September, as opposed to the 18.3 inches (465 mm) that falls during the rest of the year.

The Pharr International Bridge is the sixth busiest commercial land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere. In 2018, the bridge handled $92 billion in trade.
