History of Fort Lee

Fort Lee is a borough at the eastern border of Bergen County, New Jersey, United States, in the New York City Metropolitan Area, situated atop the Hudson Palisades. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough’s population was 35,345, reflecting a decline of 116 (0.3%) from the 35,461 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 3,464 (+10.8%) from the 31,997 counted in the 1990 Census.

The borough is the site of the George Washington Bridge and is named for the site’s 18thcentury fort, Fort Lee, which was captured by Continental Army troops led by George Washington and Alexander Hamilton during the American Revolutionary War.

The Fort Lee Historic Park occupies the bluff overlooking Burdett’s Landing, where Fort Lee is believed to have been constructed. Fort Lee was the headquarters of Major General Nathanael Greene during the War of Independence. Also housing the legendarily large Continental Army during the war, the area served as military bastion against the British, who occupied New York City just across the river. The famous light that marks Sandy Hook can be seen from Fort Lee’s southern tip, as well as from the top of the George Washington Bridge.

During the early years of the twentieth century, early film studios in Fort Lee produced many silent films.
