History of Albuquerque
Albuquerque, New Mexico is the 32nd most populous city in the United States. The city’s metropolitan area covers four counties with a population of 907,301 as of the 2010 census. Albuquerque is the principal city of the Albuquerque metropolitan area, which had a population of 915,927 as of the 2010 census. The city was named by Francisco Vázquez de Coronado in 1540 for the viceroy of New Spain, Don Antonio de Mendoza y Pacheco. The Town of Albuquerque was incorporated in 1706 as a Spanish colonial outpost. It became a part of the Mexican Empire in 1821 after the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, the town was occupied by the American army during the Mexican–American War. Albuquerque was a stopping point along the Santa Fe Trail, and it was designated as the county seat of Bernalillo County in 1852.
