History of Atlantic City

The area now known as Atlantic City was a busy node of trade and travel long before it was officially founded in 1854. The first known European settlement in the area was Absegami, established by Swedish immigrants in 1659. 12 miles north of what is now Atlantic City, the town was absorbed into the Galloway Township in 1798. The township spanned from Egg Harbor to Little Egg Harbor, and included the future site of Atlantic City. In the early 1800s, maritime trade increased in the area, and small towns began to spring up around the wharves where ships docked. One of these towns was called Brighton, which was later renamed Atlantic City in 1854.

The city was originally incorporated as a borough on May 1, 1854, and then as a city on March 3, 1874. The city was named for the Atlantic Ocean, which lies just to its east. The city was the first seaside resort in the United States, and became widely known as a Boardwalk Empire. The Boardwalk was originally built in 1870 as a way to keep sand out of hotel lobbies, and quickly became the center of social life in the city.

The city’s popularity as a tourist destination rose in the late 19th century, thanks in part to the construction of railroads that made travel to the coast much easier. Atlantic City became known for its luxury hotels, casinos, and sandy beaches. In 1976, the city’s first casino, Resorts International, opened. Today, gambling is a major part of the city’s economy, and it is home to many large casinos.

The Atlantic City area was severely affected by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, with widespread flooding and damage to businesses and homes. The city has been working to rebuild since then, and is once again a popular destination for tourists from all over the world.
