History of Exeter
Exeter is a town in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 1,687 at the 2010 census. Exeter was the last town admitted to the state of Rhode Island and is therefore the youngest town in the state.
The land that comprises Exeter was originally part of four separate towns: Portsmouth, Newport, Warwick, and East Greenwich. These four towns were incorporated into the City of Newport in 1673. In 1730, the southern part of Newport was ceded to Massachusetts, and in 1741 the northeastern section was returned to Rhode Island. East Greenwich was later annexed by Warwick in 1746, and in 1845 Warwick ceded a portion of its territory to Newport.
The present town of Exeter was finally incorporated on March 7, 1865. The town was named for the city of Exeter in England.
The first settlers in Exeter were Richard Smith and his family, who arrived in 1638. The Smiths built a house and farm on the site that is now occupied by the town hall. Other early settlers included the Hazard, Tripp, Ashton, and Jenckes families.
In 1643, the General Court of Massachusetts granted a charter to Roger Williams and twelve others to start a new colony in Rhode Island. The colony was located south of the Pawtucket River, which was then the border between Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The area that is now Exeter was included in this new colony, which was named Providence Plantations.
The town of Exeter was originally part of King Philip’s War in 1675, but no battles were fought here. The nearest battle was the Great Swamp Fight, which took place in nearby South Kingstown.
In 1776, the Rhode Island General Assembly meeting in Exeter voted to renounce allegiance to the British crown and declare Rhode Island a free and independent state.
During the American Revolution, Exeter was the site of a major ammunition depot. In 1778, the British army raided the depot and destroyed much of the ammunition.
In 1800, the town of Newport was divided into two parts, and the town of Exeter was created from the southern part.
Exeter has always been a small town, with a population that has never exceeded 2,000. The town’s largest industry has been agriculture, and Exeter’s farmers have supplied the local market with milk, vegetables, fruit, and meat.
In recent years, Exeter has become a bedroom community for workers in nearby Providence and Newport. Many of the town’s older houses have been renovated, and new houses have been built on old farms and in the town center.
