History of Ogdensburg
Ogdensburg is a city in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. The population was 11,128 at the 2010 census. In the 18th century, the area was part of the French colony of Canada. The City of Ogdensburg is at the northern border of New York State, adjacent to the Province of Ontario, Canada.
Ogdensburg International Airport is across the Oswegatchie River from the City of Ogdensburg. Ogdensburg is the principal city of the Ogdensburg, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area and is also considered part of the WatertownMassena, NY Combined Statistical Area.
The Town of Oswegatchie was established in 1796 by the Town of Canton. In 1902, the City of Ogdensburg was incorporated, superseding the Village of Ogdensburg which had been incorporated in 1813. The city became the county seat of St. Lawrence County when the county was established in 1821.
The 1000 Islands Bridge, connecting the United States with Canada, crosses the St. Lawrence River from the City of Ogdensburg to the Ontario town of Lansdowne.
Ogdensburg is home to Summerside Park, the Frederick Remington Art Museum, the Customs House Museum, and the Frederic Remington Artistic Enclave.
The City of Ogdensburg is named after Colonel Augustus Gibbes Ogden, who was a hero of the War of 1812. Colonel Ogden served as the chief engineer in the construction of Fort Wellington in Prescott, Ontario. He was killed in action while leading his troops in the Battle of Crysler’s Farm in November 1813.
