East Orange is a city located in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city’s population was 64,270, reflecting a decline of 5,554 (−8.1%) from the 69,824 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 3,728 (−5.1%) from the 73,552 counted in the 1990 Census.
The city was the state’s 20th mostpopulous municipality in 2010, after having been the state’s 14th mostpopulous municipality in 2000.
East Orange was initially settled in 1664 by Connecticut Puritans under the name “Machackemeck”. It was incorporated as a township on February 26, 1780, and as a city on March 4, 1863. The city has been home to several notable people, including jazz musician Stanley Jordan, NFL player Victor Cruz, and R&B singer Lauryn Hill.

2010 Census
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 64,270 people, 24,945 households, and 15,046 families residing in the city. The population density was 16,377.1 per square mile (6,347.0/km2). There were 28,803 housing units at an average density of 7,339.5 per square mile (2,830.8/km2)*. The racial makeup of the city was 4.13% (2,650) White, 88.51% (5,710) African American, 0.39% (250) Native American, 1.89% (1,215) Asian, 0.03% (19) Pacific Islander, 2.73% (1,753) from other races, and 2.41% (1,553) from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.67% (3,631) of the population.
There were 24,945 households out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 28.5% were married couples living together, 28.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% were nonfamilies. 33.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.33.
In the city, the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34.8 years. For every 100 females there were 86.1 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and old there were 81.8 males.

History of East Orange
East Orange, New Jersey is a city in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. It was incorporated as a township on February 18, 1863, and as a city on December 9, 1899.
The city has a total area of 4.29 square miles (11.1 km2), all of it land.
East Orange shares borders with Newark to the east and south, South Orange to the southwest, Orange to the west, and Glen Ridge to the northwest. Unincorporated communities, localities and place names located partially or completely within the city include Ampere and Brick Church.
The city was originally incorporated as a township on February 18, 1863, and coterminous with Orange Township, before reincorporating as a city on December 9, 1899, based on the results of a referendum held two days earlier. On April 13, 1877, East Orange was set off from Orange, becoming an independent municipality. On July 1, 1895, East Orange was divided into four wards, each of which had two elected aldermen: West Ward (west of Center Street and north of Central Avenue), East Ward (east of Center Street), South Ward (south of Central Avenue) and North Ward (north of Central Avenue). East Orange expanded in a series of annexations. The first annexation occurred on May 1, 1905, when West Orange was annexed to East Orange, followed by the June 6, 1906 annexation of South Orange. On January 31, 1908, East Orange annexed the area east of Park Avenue, including a portion of the Eagle Rock neighborhood. This brought the city to nearly its presentday size. On March 18, 1908, West Orange annexed the area west of Mount Pleasant Avenue and north of Eagle Rock. The final annexation occurred on October 30, 1920, when East Orange annexed the area known as Brookdale.
East Orange went through a particularly tumultuous period in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1960, Mayor Leslie arithmetic Curtis was convicted of extortion, although he remained in office until his death in office in 1969. In 1965, there were riots after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. In 1978, Mayor Anthony R. Sobotker was charged with conspiracy and mail fraud, but was later acquitted.
In the 1990s, East Orange underwent a significant resurgence, led by Mayor Bobby Lewis. Under his leadership, the city saw the construction of a new library, the reopening of the East Orange campus of Seton Hall University and the construction of a new performing arts center. The city also saw an increase in home ownership, and a decrease in crime.
