History of Menlo Park (New Jersey)
Menlo Park is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough’s population was 4,593,[8][9][10] reflecting an increase of 332 (+7.7%) from the 4,261 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 1,365 (24.1%) from the 5,626 counted in the 1990 Census.[19]
The Borough of Menlo Park was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 13, 1874, from portions of Raritan Township (now Edison).[20] The Borough was reincorporated on February 21, 1887. It derives its name from the suburb of Menlo Park, California.
In the late 19th century, the borough became a commuter town for Manhattan, where employees of Thomas Edison’s Edison Laboratories settled after Edison moved the facility to West Orange in 1887.[21] The laboratories closed in 1930.[22] The Menlo Park Train Station, located at the intersection of Ravenswood Avenue and Alma Street, operated from 1867 to 1987 and was served by the Central Railroad of New Jersey and Amtrak. A few remnants of the Edison era remain, including the Menlo Park Mall, originally developed as a commercial center to serve residents working in New York City.[23]

The Menlo Park fire of September 6, 1884, destroyed six city blocks, including a hundred stores and offices, two hotels, and a variety of manufacturing establishments. A second fire on Christmas Eve of that year destroyed much of the remaining business district. These disasters prompted the construction of a fireproof building code, which required all new buildings to be of “fireproof” construction.
In the early 20th century, Menlo Park became known as the “City of Silk” for the many silk mills located within its borders. The city was also home to a large manufacturing plant for the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, which produced the early Stanley steampowered automobiles.
The city declined in the mid20th century, as the silk industry went into decline and the Stanley company ceased operations. The population of Menlo Park dropped from a peak of over 14,000 in 1940 to less than 10,000 by 1970.
The Menlo Park Historic District, which encompasses the downtown area, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The district includes a number of properties that are significant for their architecture or history, including the Menlo Park Hotel, the MoodieBenenson House, and the old Menlo Park Firehouse.
In recent years, the city has undergone a renaissance, with the opening of new shops and restaurants, the renovation of historic buildings, and the construction of new office and residential developments. The Menlo Park Downtown Business District Plan, adopted in 2015, seeks to further enhance the downtown area as a thriving destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment.
