History of Lewes
Lewes was founded in 1631 when a group of Dutchspeaking families from Zwaanendael (now Lewes, Delaware), the first European settlement in Delaware, moved to the southern bank of the Delaware River. They established a whaling and trading post at Sleepy Hollow on Cape Henlopen, building homes and businesses on what is now Second Street and Lewes’ historic district.
In 1632, the Zwaanendael colony was destroyed by a combined band of Lenape and Swedish forces, and its inhabitants were either killed or captured. The adjacent Hoek van Lewes ( Lewes Point) was later settled by the Dutch. The town was renamed soon after Lewes Lurensen, for the first governor of the Dutch colony of New Netherland.
The area remained primarily agricultural until the mid19th century, when it began to develop as a resort town, attracting tourists from Philadelphia and other cities. The Cape May – Lewes Ferry was established in 1873, making Lewes an important tourism stop between Cape May, New Jersey, and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
TheLewes Historic District, encompassing the town’s commercial center and residential neighborhoods, was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1971. The downtown area is also home to a number of fine restaurants, antique shops, and art galleries.
The Cape Henlopen State Park, located just south of Lewes, offers miles of beaches, hiking and biking trails, and a variety of outdoor activities. The park is also home to the WWIIera Fort Miles, which has been restored and is open to the public.
