History of Concord (New Hampshire)

The area that is now Concord was originally settled by the Pennacook and Western Abenaki Native American tribes. The Pennacook tribe fished and farmed along the Merrimack River in the area, and the Western Abenaki hunted and gathered in the hills and forests.

The first European settlers came to the area in the early 1600s. The first permanent settlement was established in 1727, and Concord was incorporated as a town in 1765. The city was named for the town in Massachusetts where many of the settlers had come from.
