History of Manti

Manti is a city in Sanpete County, Utah, United States. The population was 3,276 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sanpete County.

The city is notable for its concentration of 19thcentury Mormon vernacular architecture. Must see sites include the Manti Utah Temple, the Manti City Hall, and the Central Utah Telegraph Museum.

The city was founded in 1849 by Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young. It was the site of a critical moment in the Mormon conflict with the US federal government known as the Utah War.

Manti was an important stop on the Central Pacific Railroad line and was even considered as a possible site for the transcontinental railroad’s meeting point with the Union Pacific Railroad. However, the transcontinental railroad ultimately met in Promontory, Utah.
