History of Springville
Springville, Utah, is a city in Utah County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Provo–Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 29,466 at the 2010 census.
A fort was built in 1854 along the Spanish Fork of the Rio Virgin River by William Bringhurst and a company of Mormon volunteers during the Utah War with the United States. This fort was never used for military purposes but was primarily a way to protect the settlers from Indian raids. Because of the fort, the area acquired the name of “Bringhurst’s Fort”.
In the late 1860s, small numbers of settlers moved into the Spanish Fork valley. On July 24, 1877, the first issue of the Spanish Fork Press was published. It is Utah’s oldest weekly newspaper. Springville was officially incorporated as a city on April 18, 1884, with John C. Sharp as mayor. At the time of incorporation, the population was just over 1,000.
One of the first schools in Springville was organized in 1856 and held in a private home. In 1871, the first permanent public schoolhouse was built. This oneroom stone building is now the site of the Museum of Art at the Springville Center for the Arts.
