History of Longview (Washington)

Founded in the early 1800s as a furtrading post, Longview is situated on the southern bank of the Columbia River in southwest Washington near the state’s border with Oregon. The city began to take shape in the late 19th century with the arrival of the railroad and the establishment of the port of Longview. Today, Longview is a thriving community with a focus on lumber and paper production, as well as healthcare and education.

The area that is now Longview was inhabited for millennia by various Native American tribes. In the early 1800s, European fur traders set up shop in the area, attracted by the abundance of beaver and other furbearing animals.

In 1834, the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) established Fort Vancouver as its Pacific Northwest headquarters. Fort Vancouver was the base of operations for the HBC’s vast fur trading empire. The Longview area was within the territory covered by the fort, and so it became a stopping point for HBC employees travelling up and down the Columbia River.

In 1849, the United StatesGovernment established the Oregon Territory, which included presentday Washington. The following year, HBC ceded its territorial claims south of the 49th parallel to the US, and Fort Vancouver became a US military post.

In the 1850s and 1860s, the US government encouraged settlement of the Pacific Northwest with the promise of free land. A number of settlers staked claims in the Longview area, but most left when it became clear that there was little water available for irrigation.
