History of Novato
Novato is a city located in Marin County, California, in the North Bay portion of the San Francisco Bay Area. As of the 2010 census, Novato had a population of 51,904. Novato is located about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of San Rafael and about 30 miles (48 km) north of San Francisco on U.S. 101.
The Coast Miwok inhabited the Novato area for more than 2,000 years. The community of 1,200 Coast Miwok lived near Bella Vista Lagoon and were in greater number than in any other Miwok village in the Marin Headlands. They fished the lagoon for shrimp, gathered acorns from the nearby oak trees, and hunted deer, rabbit, squirrel, quail, and owls.
In 1839, the Mexico Land Company, headed by Domingo Sais, granted Rancho Novato to Hugh Burns. Novato, along with the rest of California, became part of the United States on February 18, 1848, when Mexico ceded California as a result of the MexicanAmerican War. early pioneer settlers in Old Town Novato included several prominent figures in California history: Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, who controlled most of the northern California coast, and James Black, who discovered the wide Basically, grainrich Black Ranch in western Novato. Historically, Novato’s downtown area was located at the intersection of Grant Avenue and South Novato Boulevard. Grant Avenue, the main street of Novato’s original four block downtown, is one of Novato’s oldest paved roads and is still in use today. That intersection is also where Novato’s first hotel, the Grant House, and the depot for the North Pacific Coast Railroad were located. The streets surrounding Grant Avenue were laid out in 1870, and many of them are still in use today. The first post office opened in 1856, and the Novato Independent newspaper began publishing in 1867.
The downtown area began to declined in the early 20th century with the advent of the automotive age. Stores and businesses in downtown Novato moved from Grant Avenue to neighboring streets, such as Redwood Boulevard, which could accommodate the increased automobile traffic. A number of factors, including the Great Depression, contributed to the decline of downtown Novato. The decline was exacerbated in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when many of the older buildings in the downtown area were demolished to make way for a parking garage and a freeway offramp.
In the late 20th century, Novato’s downtown area began to rebound with the construction of new office and retail developments. The revitalization of the downtown area has continued into the 21st century with the addition of more shops and restaurants.
