History of Red Bluff
Red Bluff is a city in and the county seat of Tehama County, California, United States. The population was 14,076 at the 2010 census, up from 13,147 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Redding metropolitan area. Contrary to its name, Red Bluff is not located on the bank of the Sacramento River, which is approximately 5mi to its east, nor is it in proximity to any otherNotable landforms include a prominent hill situated just east of downtown, known as Hilltop Park. There are also a number of streams and rivers including the potential state waterway the Antelope Creek Waterway.
The first European settler in the area was Josiah Belden, who came in 1844 and squatted near the present day site of Red Bluff. In 1848 he built a log cabin and farm on the banks of Antelope Creek and plant wheat, barley, and oats. The creek at that time was teeming with salmon and trout, providing him with enough to feed his family and sell to others. By 1852 Josiah had found enough success to warrant building a permanent adobe home, which still stands today as the Josiah Belden House museum. Josiah Belden and his family were some of the first settlers in Tehama County and helped in the establishment of the first post office and court house in 1850.
In 1856 Belden sold his farm to Levi Scott, a Massachusetts sailor turned merchant who arrived in San Francisco from the East Coast in 1849. Scott then came to presentday Tehama County and by 1858 had built a large adobe home in central Red Bluff. Levi Scott owned several thousand acres of land in the Red Bluff area, and was one of the largest wheat farmers in all of California. He maintained a large herd of cattle, and employed several cowboys to help run his ranch. Levi Scott was one of the original directors of the Bank of Tehama, which was established in Red Bluff in 1854.
The town of Red Bluff was officially incorporated on February 11, 1876. By 1890 the town had a population of 2,183. However, the completion of the Central Pacific Railroad through the nearby town of Redding diverted much of the economic growth that would have otherwise occurred in Red Bluff. The population of Red Bluff did not grow much during the early 20th century, but did see a small boost in population during World War II as the local Army Air Base, Red Bluff Army Airfield, was used as a training base for pilots.

The highest recorded temperature in Red Bluff was 114 °F (46 °C) on August 5, 1981, and the lowest recorded temperature was 17 °F (−8 °C) on December 11, 1932. Annual precipitation averages 24.5 inches (62 cm), falling on an average of 79 days. The wettest “rain year” was from July 1994 to June 1995 when 39.92 inches (101.3 cm) fell, and the driest from July 1976 to June 1977 when only 11.65 inches (296 mm) fell. There are an average of 43 days annually with measurable precipitation. Snowfall is very rare in Red Bluff, averaging only 0.2 inches (0.51 cm), and has been recorded as recently as February 5, 1976.
Founded in the early 1850s, Red Bluff was initially a small frontier town built around the bustling trade of goods coming downriver from Oregon on the newly constructed Northern California trail. The gold rush of 1849 led to an influx of miners and prospectors passing through the area, many of whom decided to stay and build their homes in Red Bluff. The town soon became a bustling hub for merchandise, stagecoaches, and livestock, and was even briefly considered as a possible site for the state capital of California. However, the discovery of gold in Northern California led to a decrease in river traffic and a general decline in the fortunes of Red Bluff.
