History of Fontana
Fontana, California, was founded by Azariel Blanchard Miller in 1913. The city was originally known as the “Town of Clairemont.” However, when the Santa Fe Railroad built a branch line through the area in 1914, the town was renamed after one of the company’s directors, Henry E. Fontana. The city rapidly grew after World War II, becoming one of the largest suburbs in the Inland Empire. Today, Fontana is home to over 200,000 residents.
The area now known as Fontana was originally inhabited by the Serrano people. The first European settlers were Spanish missionaries, who established the San Bernardino de Sena Estancia in the early 18th century. fonts. In 1913, Azariel Blanchard Miller, a real estate developer from Ohio, purchased land in the southern portion of the San Bernardino Valley with the intention of establishing a town.
