History of San Jose

San Jose is the largest city in Northern California and the 10th largest city in the United States. It is the county seat of Santa Clara County and the home of many hightech companies such as Cisco Systems, eBay, and Adobe Systems.

The first European settlement in the area now known as San Jose was founded in 1777 by the Spanish as Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe. The town was named after Saint Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary. The town was originally home to the Ohlone Native American tribe.

In 1846, during the MexicanAmerican War, American Commodore John D. Sloat claimed California for the United States. California then became a state in 1850. San Jose was made the state capital in 1852. However, in 1864, the capital was moved to Sacramento.

During the 1850s and 1860s, San Jose was booming due to the California Gold Rush. Many of the city’s historic buildings date from this time period.

In 1969, San Jose State University was the site of student protests against the Vietnam War. The protests turned violent and one person was killed.

Today, San Jose is a thriving metropolis and the cultural and economic center of the Silicon Valley. The city is home to many hightech companies and is a major tourist destination.
