History of North Hempstead
Europeans first settled in the area now known as North Hempstead in 1643, when a group from Connecticut bought land from the Algonquianspeaking Indians. The area eventually came under English rule in 1665. The Town of North Hempstead was created in 1784 when the Town of Hempstead was divided into three parts: Hempstead, North Hempstead, and Oyster Bay. The name “North Hempstead” is derived from the Dutch “Noord Hempsted,” or North Settlement.
The Town of North Hempstead went through several changes in the 19th century. In 1837, the western part of the town was separated to form the Town of West Hempstead, and in 1853 the southern part of the town was separated to form the Town of South Hempstead. (The presentday Village of Hempstead is located within the Town of Hempstead.) The Long Island Rail Road reached North Hempstead in 1867, bringing with it increased development and population growth.
In the early 20th century, North Hempstead was still mostly rural, with large tracts of farmland and estates dotting the landscape. However, this began to change with the construction of the Northern State Parkway in the 1930s, which brought with it increased suburbanization. This trend continued in the following decades, as more and more people moved to North Hempstead to take advantage of the suburban lifestyle.
