History of Normal

Detailed History

The city of Normal, Illinois is located in McLean County and was founded on February 25, 1856. The name “Normal” was derived from the new Illinois State Normal University that opened in the city. The university’s founders, Jesse W. Fell and John W. Cook, named the city after the French word for “normal” or “regular,” in hopes that the new community and institution would be a model of Midwestern morality, orderliness, and hard work.

Early on, the town’s leaders envisioned Normal as a dry, moral city and passed laws banning gambling and alcohol. The community was also known for its support of abolition prior to the Civil War. In 1860, the town’s residents voted to prohibit African Americans from living within the city limits and by 1865 all liquor stores had been closed.

During the Civil War, the town’s economy boomed as the university trained soldiers for the Union army and the area’s agriculture flourished. The city continued to grow rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the development of new manufacturing industries.

The Great Depression hit Normal hard, but the city experienced a resurgence in the years following World War II. The university experienced a period of tremendous growth and the city’s population doubled between 1940 and 1960.

Today, the city of Normal is a thriving community with a vibrant economy and a strong commitment to education and the arts. The city is home to Illinois State University, a nationallyranked institution of higher learning, as well as a number of businesses and cultural organizations. Normal is truly a unique and special place with a rich history and bright future.
