History of Newport News
Founded in the fall of 1852 by Collis P. Huntington, Newport News was one of the earliest cities established in what is now Hampton Roads. The new town was located on the James River about 3 miles (5 km) upstream from Hampton and 20 miles (32 km) from Richmond. It was named for Christopher Newport, the captain who had led the first English settlers to Jamestown in 1607. Newport News became a shipbuilding center during the American Civil War (1861–1865) and afterward. The city grew rapidly after the war, especially with the addition in 1886 of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) headquarters, docks, and repair shops. The C&O built the Peninsula Extension, linking Newport News to the coal fields of West Virginia and providing an allwater route to the Midwest. Although the main economic activity shifted to shipping and related industries in the early 1900s, shipbuilding—especially for the U.S. Navy—remained important during both World Wars and afterward. Newport News Point, at the southern tip of the Peninsula, was the site of the world’s first drydock, used in 1833 to repair the U.S. frigate Chesapeake. The first ironclad ships were built there during the Civil War. The city’s geographic location, deepwater port, and industrial facilities have continued to make it an important shipbuilding and shiprepair center.
Newport News Shipbuilding, now a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is the only shipyard in the United States that builds nuclearpowered aircraft carriers and one of two that builds nuclearpowered submarines. The shipyard is an integral part of the city’s economy and employs about 23,000 workers.
