History of McKeesport
Located in southwestern Pennsylvania, McKeesport is at the confluence of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers, about 19 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The area was first settled in 1758 and laid out as a town in 1842. Incorporated as a borough in 1842 and as a city in 1891, McKeesport became a major center for coal mining and steel production in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With the decline of the coal and steel industries, however, the city’s economy has become more diversified.
The first settlers in the McKeesport area were Col. James Burd, who arrived in 1758, and John Campbell, who came the following year. The two men laid out a town called Burdtown, which was later renamed McKeesport, in honor of John McKee, an area landowner. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1842, and its first mayor was elected in 1843.
In 1857, the Pittsburgh, McKeesport & Youghiogheny Railroad (PMY) was completed, making McKeesport a major transportation hub. The development of coal mines and steel mills in the late 19th and early 20th centuries resulted in a dramatic increase in the city’s population. By 1900, McKeesport’s population had grown to more than 32,000, and by 1910 it had reached nearly 60,000.
The city’s economy was largely based on coal and steel until the mid20th century, when the industry began to decline. As a result, McKeesport’s population began to decline as well, falling to less than 40,000 by 1970. The city has since diversified its economy, and its population has stabilized at around 19,000.
