History of Lisle

Lisle is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 22,390 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The ChicagoPORT Community Alliance is the redevelopment organization for the village.

Lisle was founded in 1832 by James C. hatch as DuPage Center. Hatch later changed the name of the town to Lisle after a local Native American tribe, the DuPage, who lived in the area prior to European settlement. The Lisle Veterans Memorial Monument is located in downtown Lisle.

Lisle is located at 41°47′49″N 88°06′33″W (41.796859, 88.109239), about 25 miles west of Chicago. The village lies on the ancient glacialeport of Lake Chicago, known today as the DuPage River. The bedrock of the Dupage River valley consists of glacial till, sand, gravel and clay deposited by the retreating glaciers which once covered the area.

The DuPage River today flows from southeast to northwest through the village, and is joined by a tributary, Springbrook Creek, just before it leaves town. Originally, the DuPage River flowed into Lake Michigan, but its mouth was gradually blocked by sand and debris until it eventually emptied into Glas und Mendota lakes, both of which are now dry.

According to the 2010 census, Lisle has a total area of 8.44 square miles (21.87 km2), of which 8.43 square miles (21.84 km2) (or 99.88%) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) (or 0.12%) is water.

Lisle is bordered by six municipalities: Naperville to the west, Warrenville to the southwest, Wheaton to the south, Downers Grove to the southeast, Woodridge to the northeast and Winfield to the north. Along with these communities, Lisle is also part of a larger grouping of towns sometimes called the EastWest Corridor, which also includes the cities of Lombard, Oak Brook, Hinsdale and Westmont.

The Lisle Park District operates more than 30 parks on over 1,200 acres (4.9 km2) of land. The district also manages the Summer concerts in the park series and the Lisle Community Center.

The town is also home to the Morton Arboretum, a 2,700acre (11 km2) outdoor museum with more than 4,000 types of trees and other plants, and the Community Newspapers Group, which publishes 12 weekly newspapers in neighboring Chicago suburbs.
