History
The first European settlers in Claremont were English farmers who settled near the confluence of the Sugar and Sugar River rivers in 1764. The town was originally known as “Sugar Town”, due to the large sugar maples that grew in the area.
In 1767, the town was renamed “Claremont” after John Pitt, 2nd Earl of Clare.
The town was incorporated in 1770.
The Battle of Valcour Island, a pivotal battle in the American Revolutionary War, was fought on Lake Champlain in Claremont on October 11, 1776.
The first member of the United States House of Representatives from New Hampshire, Jeremiah Smith, was from Claremont.
The first textile mill in New Hampshire was built in Claremont in 1823. The mill was powered by the water of the Sugar River.

History of Claremont (New Hampshire)
Situated in the picturesque Claremont Valley at the confluence of the Sugar and Mill Rivers, Claremont is a city brimming with history. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1764, drawn by the rich farmland and water power potential of the area. The following year, the town was chartered as Number 7 in the New Hampshire grants.
The early years of Claremont were marked by conflict, both with the neighboring town of Charlestown and with the Vermont Republic, which claimed the area. These disputes were finally resolved in 1782 with the establishment of the border between New Hampshire and Vermont.
The town rapidly developed into an important center of trade and industry. Waterpowered mills sprang up along the rivers, and the city became known for its fine woolen cloth. In 1849, the Sullivan Railroad brought the first rail service to Claremont, further boosting the city’s growth.
