History of Clayton
Clayton was originally settled by the Delaware Indians in the 1600s. The name “Clayton” is derived from Fort Clayton, which was named after John Clayton, a colonel in the Revolutionary War. Clayton was incorporated as a borough in 1869 and became a city in 1888.
The first European settlers in the area were Quakers who came from Pennsylvania in the early 1700s. They built log cabins and farms in the area. Clayton was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, which was a network of safe houses that helped escaped slaves travel to freedom in the North.
Clayton remained a small, rural town until the late 1800s, when the railroad and industrialization began to transform the area. The city’s population grew rapidly, reaching 6,000 by 1900. Many of the new residents were German and Irish immigrants.
