History of Mexico
Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, is the oldest city in the Americas, founded as Tenochtitlan in 1325. The city became the capital of the Aztec empire in 1428. The Spanish conquered the city in 1521 and renamed it Mexico City. Mexico City was the capital of the Spanish viceroyalty of New Spain until 1785 when Madrid assumed power over the colony. Following independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico City became the capital of the First Mexican Empire and then of the Second Mexican Empire. It was the capital of the Mexican Republic from 1823 to 1864, when the empire was established again. The city was severely damaged during the Mexican–American War in 1847, when it was besieged and occupied by the United States Army. It was rebuilt in the following years. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, Mexico City grew rapidly, becoming one of the largest cities in the world by the 1920s.
The city’s rich history can be seen in its buildings and architecture which reflect a mix of Mesoamerican, European and American influences. The city’s iconic Zocalo, or main square, is the site of the Palacio Nacional, the former Aztec palace which now houses the offices of the Mexican government, as well as the Metropolitan Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in the Americas.
